Thomas Nozkowsi is currently presenting a collection of work in a self-titled exhibition at the Pace Gallery. For his sixth solo show at the gallery, Nozkowski unveils 25 of his signature paintings and drawings created between the early 1970s and early 2000s. Sticking to a 16 x 20 canvas, Nozkowski is best known for his use of rich, vibrant colors and small scale paintings and drawings that push the limits of visual language. His style and subject matter often reflects upon specific places and experiences and he translates those memories into an abstract language.
Through this process, Nozkowski often returns to certain ideas and will spend weeks, months, or even years exploring the full range of possibilities for a given form, color, or gesture.
One painting that stands out is Untitled (7-10) set against a sky blue backdrop which contrasts with the crimson color of the partially rounded object which serves as the focal point. More color contrast can be seen in the middle of the shape as a bright patch of yellow lights up the center and appears to attract mysterious creatures represented with reddish-orange geometric forms varying in shape and size.
Another painting that stands out is Untitled (6-73) which is another example of stark color contrast. The piece consists of a rose-colored background and a design of several round and elongated shapes connected to each other in vertical and horizontal patterns. The shape that stands out the most is an emerald-green oval shape while the other shapes are blue-violet and light pink.
Nozkowski lives and works in High Falls, New York. His paintings have been featured in more than 300 museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide, including more than 70 solo shows.
